Why is there media regulation

  • To stop children becoming psychotic murderers ( john venables/jamie bulger case)
  • reassurance, to tell people/ public that they are safe and protected
  • make sure media is in the law
  • privicy
  • so that the truth comes out (protect from lies)
  • protect buisnesses from competitor lies (tesco asda)
Key words

Desensitisation- reducing sensitivity

Deregulation- to reduce the amount of rregulation

July 2011 news of the world was shut down by rupurt murdoch after the phone hacking scandel causing £240million loss for the news group around the world.

What factors underpin and make the idea of regulation open to change?
  • Change in values and public opinion (historical and socio- political change)
  • desensitisation as people aren't as bothered now about seeing certain things
  • changes in technology
  • cultural regulation- some cultures won't mind miley cyrus but other will be horrifyed at the video

Freedom of the press
  • freedom of the press- They get to publish what they want
  • Freedom of speech- say what you want when your own but you cant harm others
  • public intrest-What the public want to hear and what they care about
